Failure is real in any organization, whether in school or at work. It matters what we do to get better, to move from failure to success. Students at my school are here for a reason. They are high school dropouts. They are refugees from the Iraq war. They have failed in the past, but now they are taking control on their education by enrolling in our school to improve their living situations and education. They do fail like one would in any other environment, but there are resources available to assist them in achieving their goal of graduating and passing the California High School Exit Exam. Most of the students are somewhat illiterate. They also are at an academic grade level of kindergarten. The average academic grade level at my school is fifth grade. However, all students lack skills in writing. This makes it very difficult to teach students this skill as they are not just students, but they have people who financially depend on them; children, parents, or significant other. There are students who are homeless and others who cross the Mexican border everyday. | |
When they are in class, they may be falling asleep due to their living situations and circumstances. They are times when they are not engaged mentally. As an example, one student is consistently tired from not getting enough sleep the previous night because she is forced to get up at 3:00 a.m. to cross the Mexican border in order to be at school on time.
As a leader, I would invite to speak at my school community members to who have achieved their goals when facing similar struggles as our students. Perhaps have alumnus come to the school to share their experiences while attending our school and give advice on how to successfully complete the program.
