Chapter 1: Arc-of-Life Learning Quote: “Everything and everyone around us can be seen as resources for learning.” Technology has lead us to endless possibilities of learning from communities that were hard to reach at one time. Question: What were some of the struggles that Allen faced while teaching himself, and how did he overcome them? Connection: The story about Allen learning-by-googling reminded me of when I learned to create my first screencast in EDL 621. I had never created a screencast until then. Epiphany: Tom who was diagnosed with diabetes and his work on learning about the disease inspired me as an educator. One should not solely rely on caretakers for information; one should find ways to explore, learn, and connect with the world/communities that may share similar experiences, interests, goals, and/or ideas. | Chapter 2: A Tale of Two Cultures Quote: As stated in A New Culture of Learning book, “It is time to shift our thinking from the old model of teaching to a new model of learning.” We have the tools and resources to transform the culture of teaching and learning from the classroom to the world. Technology has opened a door to new learning that can happen whenever and wherever. It should not just be in the classroom environment. Question: I find it hard for someone to embrace what they don’t know. At times, I find it hard to collaborate on topics that are not relevant or interesting to my persona. So, how can someone embrace what they do not know? Individuals tend to not participate on things they do not know. They disengaged. Connection: I have recently implemented games in my classroom. I have transformed the way I deliver the curriculum. I have moved from an old culture of learning to a new culture. As a result, students seemed more engaged. I have also noticed an increased in student collaboration. Epiphany: Learning can be acquired from a variety of resources. A tablet, smartphone or computer with internet connectivity transforms the development of learning for everyone. It develops “rich” learning for the learner. |
Chapter 3: Embracing Change
Quote: “Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” This quote puts it in perspective on what I can do as a leader/educator. If I provide students with the necessary tools they will succeed. However, if I don’t, they may not succeed, and if they do, it may only be for a short period of time. Teaching how to arrive at a destination point will lead to innovators.
Question: When children are curious about their surroundings, they usually have a lot of questions. We tend to say “no” and answer their questions. How would their development be changed if we instead encourage them to experiment, find out by themselves, give them the tools, but not the answer?
Connection: Technology is an everlasting arena that gradually changes, just like I have recently done by joining social media to collaborate and learn with professionals in the fields of my interests.
Epiphany: The development of the Internet took years to be invented and commercialized. It has transformed the way we learn and live. Before there was the Internet, people would need to go a library to learn and look up information in encyclopedias. I can’t imagine the excessive amount of time spent researching one topic; hours and perhaps days. Today, with the Internet and its advanced searching capabilities to the point where people can find information in an instant. Learning has been accelerated from days to seconds.
